Peter Coney

Director, Pure International

With 40 years in the industry, there is not a lot Peter Coney doesn’t know about construction. The former CEO of a large, ASX listed project management consultancy, Peter brings a high level of expertise that’s renowned in the industry. It’s seen him provide strategic project and development management advice to large institutional clients throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Peter is passionate about project management and Pure Projects. He says Pure’s culture is unique. “It’s a make-it-happen culture, user-friendly, and very energetic.” He loves that Pure, like him, is known for getting on with the job, rather than pontificating and making excuses.

For Peter, good project management means putting time in up front to ensure a successful outcome. “You have to structure the job correctly in a holistic sense. People, systems, budget, timeframe, approach, controls, the whole lot. You have the difficult discussions first to avoid conflict, blame and time problems later.”

Good project management is also flexible, not ‘one size fits all’. It’s what the client needs and what you need to do to deliver a successful project. “Project management is like an insurance policy, if you’re under-insured you can get into a lot of trouble.”

Peter’s strengths are leadership, good business discipline, integrity and innovation – a particular passion. It was very much a part of one of his favourite projects, the Harry Seidler-designed QV1 building in Perth where a high degree of modern technology was introduced to accomplish a difficult build with extremely tight time frames. It led to record-breaking floor to floor cycle times.

Peter points out that Pure is using more new technology on a current project in the Philippines, combining lightweight steel and magnesium oxide board, rather than masonry.

A keen fly fisherman, Peter heads to the Gulf of Carpentaria, Exmouth Gulf, New Zealand, even the Seychelles to indulge his passion. “When you’ve got a 30 or 40 pound trevally on a fly rod, it’s not for the faint hearted!”
