For Adam, one of the founders of Pure Projects, a project manager is like the conductor of an orchestra. Rather than a flute player, or bass drummer, they’re up the front, guiding the team to make great music.
Adam brings a wealth of construction experience to Pure with big infrastructure projects a particular speciality. A Civil Engineer, he’s worked on some iconic projects such as Sydney’s Olympic Stadium, Randwick Racecourse and the Olympic Equestrian Centre.
A good day for Adam involves “a meeting with stakeholders looking for leadership. They’re informed of what’s happening and what the critical issues are. And they walk out feeling inspired. That brings a smile to my face.”
Adam loves the community-minded projects that Pure works on. Such as the third dome project at the Sydney Observatory. It involved technical skill, bringing together government departments and steering the project in below budget when at first that didn’t look possible. It’s about finding a way. And that’s the Pure way.
“I think we’re unique in that we have strong experience right through the journey of a project. Everyone wants a cost effective solution, but it doesn’t mean you put the cheapest resources to it. We take on a lot of projects because the previous project manager simply failed.”
Given Adam’s construction experience, his strengths lie in understanding holistically how things get put together, from start to finish. He also knows how to put teams together, to analyse strengths and weaknesses and create project groups with synergy.
That starts early as Adam does the recruitment for the Sydney office. He’s looking for people who are right for the company – and vice versa – right from day one.
For the energy Adam has left, he burns it at the beach, on the ski slopes or just keeping up with his three boys. He’s no slouch in the pool either. At one stage he was the 6th fastest 100m freestyle swimmer in Australia, narrowly missing a spot on the Commonwealth Games team.
